<p>But stop and think for a moment. You may be setting yourself up for a big disappointment. Why? Of all the very-low-calorie diets around, the 500 calorie diet is one of the most extreme, and it carries health risks as well as being a quick route to excess weight gain afterwards. Yes, that&rsquo;s right &ndash; weight GAIN.</p>
<p>A &#8216;very low-calorie diet&rsquo; is, technically, any diet in which you eat no more than 1200 calories a day. Most people use a very-low-calorie diet for short periods in conjunction with another diet plan they are already on &ndash; for example, to:</p>
<p>* speed up overall weight loss<br />
<br />* boost their present diet when it has started to level-out</p>
<p>As most dieters already know, losing weight is just the simple task of burning more calories than you consume. However, a diet that is structured around too few calories for your body&#8217;s daily needs can actually shock it into a &#8216;starvation mode&#8217;.</p>
<p>In &lsquo;starvation mode&rsquo;, the body lowers its metabolic rate and changes it energy sources. This can cause your body to start to burn up your muscle mass. This has two adverse effects:</p>
<p>* your metabolism will simply slow down and you will stop losing weight<br />
<br />* burning muscle-tissue carries other, more serious health risks</p>
<p>For losing weight, you actually need to gain muscle. So &#8216;starvation mode&rsquo; must be avoided. <p>Instead replace some of your unhealthy foods with healthy foods. You can start a better diet and it will be a low calorie diet compared to what many people have been eating.</p>
<p>Focus on more vegetables in your diet. Especially the leafy green vegetables. Eat 7 or more half-cup servings of vegetables a day. This would mean two or three different servings of vegetables per meal. Eat a variety of vegetables, with a variety of colors each day. This creates visual appeal, different textures and the good nutrition that you need.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t cut them out, but don&#8217;t use as much of the root vegetables because they are more starchy. Example: potatoes, sweet potatoes.</p>
<p>Drink water instead of soft drinks and fruit juices. This will lower your calories and provide you with the fluids you need for health and weight loss. Yes, water and plenty of it will help you lose weight.</p>
<p>I saw a show in which an obese teenager did not have a clue about calories or nutrition, but she was very willing to learn. <br />1 Teaspoon Fresh Lemon Juice &#8211; FREE<br />
<br />1/2 Garlic Clove, Crushed &#8211; FREE<br />
<br />Pinch of Salt &#8211; FREE<br />
<br />1/4 Teaspoon Freshly Ground Black Pepper &#8211; FREE<br />
<br />6 Flat Anchovies, Minced &#8211; 25<br />
<br />1/2 Teaspoon Dijon Mustard &#8211; FREE<br />
<br />1 1/2 Tablespoons Olive Oil &#8211; 150<br />
<br />Tear romaine into small bite size pieces, place in medium bowl. Set aside. Combine egg, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, garlic, salt, pepper, anchovies and mustard in a small bowl. Whisk until smooth. Slowly whisk in oil until smooth. Add dressing to lettuce and toss. Sprinkle with cheese and add croutons. Toss again and serve immediately.<br />

<br />12 oz. Cooked Weight (About 24 oz. Raw) Jumbo Shrimp &#8211; 200<br />
<br />5 Tablespoons Chili Sauce &#8211; 100<br />
<br />6 Tablespoons Catsup &#8211; 100<br />
<br />1-2 Garlic Cloves, Minced &#8211; FREE<br />
<br />2 Tablespoons Horseradish &#8211; FREE<br />
<br />2 Teaspoons Fresh Lemon Juice &#8211; FREE<br />
<br />1/2 Teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce &#8211; FREE<br />
<br />1/2 Teaspoon Hot Sauce (Optional) &ndash; FREE<br />
<br />6 Lemon Slices &ndash; FREE<br />
<br />8 Springs Fresh Parsley &#8211; FREE</p>
<p>Peel and de-vein shrimp leaving the tails on. Boil shrimp in salted water for 5-8 minutes until they have lost their glossy appearance and are opaque in the center. Do not overcook. Immediately plunge in cold water. Place chili sauce, catsup, garlic, horseradish, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce in a small bowl. Mix well. Cover and chill sauce for 1 hour. Place equal amounts of chilled sauce in two large martini glasses. Arrange shrimp on the rim of the glasses with the tails on the outside. Garnish with lemon slices and parsley.<br />
<br />Makes two 200 calorie servings.</p>
<p>Cheesy Breezy Broccoli and Rice Casserole<br />
<br />2 Bunches of Broccoli, Chopped &#8211; FREE<br />
<br />1 Cup Campbell&rsquo;s? Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup &#8211; 200<br />
<br />2 Cups Cooked White Rice &#8211; 400<br />
<br />6 oz. Cheddar Cheese, Shredded &#8211; 600<br />
<br />Salt, Pepper and Garlic Powder To Taste &ndash; FREE</p>
<p>Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place broccoli in a large pot, cover with water and add salt. Bring to boil, cover and cook for about 15 minutes or until broccoli is tender. Drain and place in a large bowl. Add remaining ingredients and toss lightly. Place in a casserole dish and cook for 25-30 minutes.<br />
<br />Makes six 200 calorie servings.</p>

<br />Diet one meal at a time, one day at a time. Anyone can be on a diet for a day! After you&#8217;ve had breakfast, you can look forward to lunch and after lunch you can look forward to dinner. Enjoy each meal as it comes but don&#8217;t get sidetracked. Do not think about yesterday, do not think about tomorrow. Think in terms of today only. This is a very powerful tip &#8211; use it!</p>
<p>Diet Tip #2<br />
<br />When planning your day, stay close to what you would normally have, just choose the items within your calorie range for that meal. If cereal is what you like for breakfast, by all means have cereal. But if you like to have doughnuts, you can have 2 glazed doughnuts for about 400 calories. If you like to have a salad for lunch, have a salad. But if you like to go to Burger King?, have a Whopper Jr.? and a cola. If your usual dinner is baked chicken and vegetables, enjoy. But if you like pizza, have 2 slices of pizza with a beer. With The 100 Calorie Diet, you will lose weight while still eating the foods you love!</p>

<br />Don&#8217;t think in terms of &#8220;diet&#8221; foods. Remember no foods are forbidden. And interestingly enough, the more water you drink, the less water weight you will keep on your body. More importantly, water helps to filter out impurities in your blood and carries waste to the kidneys for elimination. Water is wonderful for your skin, lubricates your joints and cushions your organs. You need water to keep your brain functioning properly and to transport nutrients in and out of cells. Convinced yet? We hope so! The next question is what kind of water? Drink only bottled or filtered water. Also try Perrier?, club soda, seltzer or sparkling waters with a twist of lemon or lime. Learn to love water!</p>
<p>Diet Tip #6<br />
<br />Don&#8217;t let the &ldquo;Fat Monster&rdquo; talk you into something you don&#8217;t really want to do. You know what your pitfalls are and what that Fat Monster will try to talk you in to. He may tell you to sneak off to Dunkin&#8217; Donuts? and eat doughnuts until you&#8217;re stuffed or he may tell you &ldquo;Who cares anyway?&rdquo;, so watch out for him! He will show up no doubt, but when he does be prepared. The minute he tries to talk you into something you don&rsquo;t want to do, say NO or STOP or X him out in your mind. Don&#8217;t let him take control because if you do, he&#8217;ll win.</p>

<br />It&#8217;s best to plan three meals a day at the same time of day if possible. This is a physical as well as mental way of eating which you should make a habit of for the rest of your life. If you want to have a snack, make sure it&rsquo;s a planned snack.</p>

<br />Keep a positive attitude and congratulate yourself for taking the first step towards a thin life. Keep negativity out of your life whether it&rsquo;s your own negativity or others&rsquo;.</p>

<br />Follow your plan but don&rsquo;t make it a big stressful deal. Don&rsquo;t make dieting more difficult than it actually is.</p>

<p>Calorie shifting diets have grown in popularity because it is a more efficient way for your body to still get healthy benefits from the foods you eat, while also losing extra fat that the body doesn&#8217;t need. It&#8217;s different than any other type of low calorie low carb diet plan.</p>
<p>The way the calorie shifting diet works is that instead of eating the same amount of carbs, proteins and fats each and every day, the diet plan has you eating a certain amount of carbs one day, a certain amount of protein another day and fat another day.</p>
<p>The result is that the total amount of calories that you would eat each day will vary &#8211; that&#8217;s why it&#8217;s called calorie shifting. Okay, now that&#8217;s the basic concept. While there are numerous books that utilize this method, the best of them all, in my opinion, is The Carb Rotation Diet by Jason Hunter.</p>
<p>While some books gloss over the fundamentals of calorie shifting and give you some foods you&#8217;re supposed to figure out how to make interesting, The Carb Rotation Diet takes the time to explain the concept in an easy-to-understand way so that you learn how your body reacts when you eat this way and why it&#8217;s beneficial to losing weight.</p>
<p>Jason has packed his book with meaty information about nutrition and dieting tips so that you aren&#8217;t left scratching your head, like with some plans, wondering why you&#8217;re eating two slices of turkey breast and a handful of nuts on Tuesday (actually, on his plan you&#8217;ll be eating a wide variety of foods).</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t know about you, but I like it when someone takes the time to explain things to me in detail. Plus, you get to learn what kind of nutritional value protein, fats and carbs have in relation to helping you to lose weight. The diet is very structured so on some days you&#8217;ll be eating a high amount of carbs, other days a low amount of carbs and yet, other days you&#8217;ll eat no carbs at all.</p>
<p>Calorie shifting actually allows you to eat foods that are comforting like, brown rice, sweet potatoes, corn, black beans, turkey, tuna fish, beef and low fat cheese. So you won&#8217;t be banning carbs from your diet or eating only carbs and not much else like some other plans. Eating a well-balanced diet is key to success with this diet.</p>
<p>Another component of any serious weight loss plan is exercise. In order to lose the most amount of weight on any diet, you have to commit to doing some type of exercise.</p>

<p>Getting your muscles moving will turn them into mini fat burners and Jason&#8217;s plan shows you how to do this using an exercise ball and hand weights. There is a bonus book that has diagrams of how to do each exercise so you can replicate it at home.</p>
<p>Another thing that I really like about this plan is that there&#8217;s a specific plan for women called, The Dramatic Dress Reduction Diet and one for men called, Get Rid of My Gut. The plans are very similar except that the exercises and bonus information caters to<br />

<p>Overall, I think this is the best calorie shifting diet book because of the amount of detailed information you receive, plus the solid facts that every dieter needs to know in order to really make a lifestyle change in their eating habits.</p>
